In this report, I will be principally focusing on the non-profit sector of Monaco. The aim however will be to analyse the organization and the business environment of Monaco. I will be also describing about the various services offered by the organization will also shed light on their revenue streams. Since, this is the organization where I had completed by internship program; I will be briefing about my job role and the valuable experience I achieved while working with the organization. I will be elaborating my job role in this report as it is only due to the job role, I have been able to learn numerous new things, which I believe will help me throughout the professional career. While working with the organization, I came to know about the significance of organization culture and the role it plays in shaping the organization function. In this context, the thrust and emphasis will be on the aspirations of the labour force, the behavioural pattern of the employees and customers and management attitude. Hence, I will be highlighting about the culture of our organization. Apart from that, I will be analysing the external business environment of the country of operation and the general environmental overview. Lastly, on the basis of the findings I will be drawing a relevant conclusion by highlighting the relevant points from the study. Then I will be also enumerating my personal experience with the company and how I will be making use of those learning in the future. Description of the organization Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a non profit organization based in Monaco. The organization came into existence in the year 1944 and was founded by Henry Giessenbier, Jr. The organization, during its inception was deemed as Service/NGO firm. JCI is basically a membership-based non-profit organization. Currently, the organization has over 200,000 members of age 18-40 years. The members are spread over 100 countries and belongs from 5000 different countries. Junior Chamber International (JCI) is currently headquartered at St. Louis, Missouri, USA and the headquarter employs around 20 individuals. These individuals are responsible for overseeing the activities of JCI, administering the overall organizational finances and provide members with optimum tools and resources so as to help them improve projects on national and local level. The company is also regarded as the world’s largest non-sectarian and non-political youth service organization. The members of the organization believe that in order to change the society towards betterment, it is extremely important to change yourself. The organization also believes that people should not be discriminated on the basis of religion or caste and as a result of that they neither encourage nor engage in any spiritual or ritual activities. The aim of the organization is to find solution for the unique problems as a commitment to build earth a safe place to live thereby ensuring a global impact due to the activities undertaken. The mission of the company is “to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. The method used is community service.” and the vision statement “to be the leading global network of young active citizens”, reflects the intention of the organization to drive positive changes in the society by the activities undertaken by them. The company’s slogan, Be Better, is evidence showcasing their true desire of bettering the society. The members of the company believe that the best results will be achieved only when the critical challenges of the society will be addressed on behalf of the communities. Hence, continuously seeking for better solution in order to build a progressive community for better is what drives the organization. In the subsequent sections of the study, I will be describing about my job role in the company. Description of the job undertaken The internship program was offered to me by the University, International University of Monaco, where I am currently pursuing Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program. Audrey Valle, who is one of the delegates from JCI Monaco Local Organizations and COC Director, has been instrumental in the process of my internship program approval. The internship programs started on 1st of April 2013. As soon as I joined, I was given the responsibility to handle the upcoming event of JCI Monaco Local Organization which was scheduled for 27th of May and was expected to continue till 2nd of June. The event was JCI 2013 European Conference Monte-Carlo. Hence, basically I was assigned with the duty of event management coordinator. Nevertheless, the job role was not constrained only with event coordination; I was also supposed to carryout various technical activities. The company was preparing for this event since two years, as a result of that, last few months were really crucial for them. Automatically, I had to bear enormous pressure from the beginning. The first real task assigned to me was to research about the restaurants located within the geographical boundaries of Monaco. After tracing the number of restaurant, the next task was to find their contact address and phone numbers. In doing so, I have used my knowledge of information technology such as Microsoft word, excel and internet research. After creating a portfolio of the restaurants, an agreement paper for each of the restaurants was created. The agreement was about the approval of the restaurants to provide lunch to the delegates. This was the activity which was a desk work. I was also responsible for carrying out outdoor activities such as meeting with the client, finalizing the deal etc. Visiting the restaurants was one of the key activities which I had to undertake during the internship program. The aforementioned activities were basically the initial tasks for me, later after the completion of signing agreement I was shifted to the role of assistant coordinator. Here my duty was to schedule the event and look after the comfort of the delegates. In order to accomplish this work, there were requirements of huge research works as our team needed to know the number of people to be attending the event. On the basis of the numbers, we were supposed to arrange the facilities. The facilities included arrangement of space, organizing and position staff members, who will be coordinating with the delegates and will address their grievances. Apart from that, we were also responsible for organizing the evening drinks for the delegates. Therefore from an overall viewpoint, I can state that my job role included technical activities in the form of secondary research, organizing data in digitalized format and report generation. In addition, the activities such as visiting suppliers, finalizing deals with the suppliers, looking after the quality experience of the delegates can be dubbed as administrative work. In the next section of the study, I will be highlighting about description and analysis of the business management and student’s job, description and analysis of the macro-environment of Monaco, description of the organization, description and analysis of the environment of the organization, description and analysis of student’s job and honest evaluation of performance and reflections on the behavioural patterns and the understanding of the aspirations of the labour force. Description and analysis of the business management and student’s job Description and analysis of the macro-environment of Monaco PESTEL analysis The company where I underwent my internship program was based in Monaco and therefore to Pestle analysis of Monaco will be carried out. PESTEL analysis is a strategic management tool that allows companies to get aware of the external business environment. PESTEL is an acronym of political, legal, environmental, social, technological and economical factors. The aim is basically to evaluate the external factors that shape the business operation of a company. The analysis is carried out below. Political – The political situation of a country act as a decider for a firm’s growth and stability in the market place. Some of the key political factors/trends that are usually considered by the companies so as to get in-depth idea of the market are tax policies, environmental regulations, international trade regulations, laws of employment, contract enforcement laws, attitude of the governments towards the sector, competition regulation, stability of the current government, and consumer protectionism acts. The factors discussed above will now be related with Monaco (Akaka and Alden 37-39; Alan 29 -31; Argandona 15). The political system of the country is Hereditary and constitutional monarchy. The country is headed by Prince Albert II represents and he is also responsible for representing the executive authority. The country also has a constitutional government which is commonly known as the national council. The country’s judicial authority is represented by various courts (Bass et al. 188). On the other hand, the legislative authority of the country is represented by the national council and also the Prince (Albert II). The political situation of the country is extremely stable due to well framed rules and regulation. As a result of the greater stability of the government and administration, the country offers favourable political situation to the companies seeking to do business in Monaco. In the similar way, the domestic companies are also getting benefitted by greater stability of the government. The prince is the chief of the state and he is provided with power in hereditary basis. The national council acts as the constitutional government which consists of 24 members. Among the 24 members, 16 of them are directly elected whereas rest of the members are selected on the basis of proportional representation. Apart from that the prince is also responsible for making all the judicial, political and sensitive decisions. The ministers of state are responsible for providing all the required administrative services and law and order supervision. The country became the member of United Nations in the year 1993, and as a result of that the security and defence infrastructure of the country became strong. The country has also entered into a treaty with France, which provide security support to the country. The country generally charges no taxes on the earned revenue and this is applicable even to housing rent and property rent. The country however charges 19.6% of VAT (Value Added Tax) on retail transaction. Apart from VAT tax on profit is the only direct tax charged by the company which is currently fixed at 25% (CIA, “Europe: Monaco”). Therefore, the analysis of the political situation of the country reflected that it is favourable for any type of business. The taxation policies are also well defined and are highly market-centric and have the potential to attract various investors. In the context of Junior Chamber International (JCI), there is no requirement of paying taxes as the organization is registered as non-profit. Rather, the organization often receives financial assistance from the government in order to host certain event as a subsidy for remaining involved in societal development works. Economic: The economic situation of a country is another major factor which is responsible for the growth and development of a particular industry. The factors that are given importance are interest rates and monetary policies, economic growth, unemployment policy, taxation, exchange rates, inflation rates among others (Bronnenberg and Mela 505) Monaco is a part of the European Union and as a result if that the currency of the country is Euro. Presently Euro is one of the strongest currencies of the world. The economic policy of the country has vast difference with any other countries. For example, the government does not charge any income tax from the residents. The GDP of Monaco was 6.075 billion USD in the year 2011 and per capita income was $186,175 (CIA, “Europe: Monaco”). This clearly shows the tremendous financial stability of the country. The country experienced a staggering 6.6% GDP growth. The high per capita income also reflects greater purchasing power of the customers. Astonishingly, the country succeeded to achieve 0% unemployment rate. The inflation of the country is also under control. The country has diversified business segment and it ranges from telephone network, postal services, banking services, Tobacco and a developing service sector. The industries and sectors of the country are regulated by the customs Union. The sectors such as hospitality and real estate are the most promising reflecting a growth of 4.5% and 31.1% growth (CIA, “Europe: Monaco”). Therefore the analysis of the economical scenario of the country clearly portrays the fact that the country has strong financial stability. The zero unemployment rate and high per capita income shows that the purchasing power of the people is considerably high. Therefore, it will be easier for Junior Chamber International (JCI), to find investors and sponsors of the various occasions and events; the organization is planning to host (Bruce 662-665). Social: - The social factors of the company include income distribution, population growth, demographics, lifestyle changes, fashion trends and education. The societal perspectives play crucial roles in deciding the purchase behaviour of the consumers. In Monaco, the rights of human being are highly respected. Apart from that the constitution of Monaco has allowed freedom of Religion, which allows the people to practise any religion of their choice. Women are also highly respected and are given the status of motherhood in the society. However, at the same time Women are also active workforce of the country. The society believes in the fact that there should be equal pay for equal work and no group should be given extra preference. As a result of that the country is remonstrating against discrimination. As of 2012 census, the total population of the country was 37,579 and is the most densely populated country of the world. The total area of the country is only 2.02Sq Km (CIA, “Europe: Monaco”). The country comprises of native Monegasques, ironically they are the minority in their own country with only 21.6% population. The largest population are French people with 28.4% representation. Other than that, Italian, British, Belgian, German, US and Swiss Nations represents 18.7%, 7.5%, 2.8%, 2.5%, 1.2% and 2.5% respectively. The major religion of the country is Christianity which represents 83.2%, Judaism 2.9%, Islam 0.8%. Around 12.9% people do not practice any religion. The life expectancy is close to 85 years (CIA, “Europe: Monaco”). Hence, for a non profit organization, it is expected that society of Monaco will act favourably. Moreover, there are hardly any major societal issues that we have come across in Monaco. Therefore, it can be stated that from the social point of view a non profit organization will be benefitted. Technological: - Nowadays, the dependence on technology by the firms is extremely high. Technology not only provides efficiency to the company but is also a source of competitive advantage. According to a study, technological infrastructure has the ability to offer plenty of advantages to the company (Kaplan 320-326). Hence, technological infrastructure is crucial for a firm’s success. In the similar way, the technical infrastructure of the country in which the company is operating is vital. The technological factors include the spending of the government on the research and development activities, the industry focus on technology, rate of technology transfer, energy use and cost, and established infrastructure. Due to the limited number of population and size, the country has never been adjudged as a technical power house of the world. Nevertheless, the country has been able to present itself as a global innovator and has been a great contributor to the environment protection system in the form of eco friendly cars, bicycles, boats, buses etc. As of 2012, the company had 44,500 telephone lines and 33,200 mobile users. Apart from that there were 26,009 internet hosts and 23,000 internet users. The country has 77 Km roadways and has Sea ports situated in the country (CIA, “Europe: Monaco”). Legal Factors: - The legal factors of a country are also important as it acts as a guideline for businesses. According to a study, a country has been successful in attracting new investors and new businesses when the country exhibited well structured legal framework (Richard 49). In Monaco, French Napoleonic code is applied for legal and law and jurisdiction system. The legal system of the country includes 4 levels of courts that are Court of First Instance, single judge; final court is Court de Revision and Court of Appeal. With the four levels of legal system, the country enjoys greater stability and fast processing of the cases. Apart from that the country has established a rule where people having visa of France will have the authority to enter Monaco without getting into other legal and administrative procedures. For example, an individual wants to venture with a new business in Monaco or wants stay in the country for more than 3 months, he/she has to take consent from the concerned authorities and also pass through all the legal and administrative authorities. However, the country does not impose any legal restriction on a foreigner who seeks to buy physical property in Monaco. In terms of the employment opportunity, the country gives special preference to Monegasques. After that the priority is for the residents of Monaco. The country has well established framework for protecting and looking after the welfare of the employees. For example, the workers are protected by law pertaining to maternity, accident, health, retirement and illness. Due to the presence of 125 diversified nationalities, the country actively discourages discrimination. Environmental Factors: - The environmental factors are also vital as companies nowadays need to comply with the rules and regulation pertaining to protection of the environment. The country is endowed with natural beauty in the form of mountains, rivers and sunny climate. The country has been successful in controlling the level of pollution in the air, water, sound etc. The country also encourages people to make use of public transport in order to limit the control of gas emission. The government is also active when it comes to check noise levels and gas emission in the air. The aforementioned facts and figures clearly represent the fact that the country is competent enough to pull of events of any magnitude. For example, hosting Monaco Grand Prix (one of the renowned tournaments of formula 1 car racing), that require enormous technical support reflects the strong technical infrastructure of the country. From the overall point of view the external business environment of the country is favourable for any kind of business. The key highlights of the analysis were that there are no income tax charged by the country and has great political stability. In addition, the country also portrays a positive attitude towards the protection of environment and society. The country also exhibited strong technological infrastructure which is one of the key requirements of doing business in a country (Richard 49). Description of the organization The company follows a standardized structure, however in some countries it varies due to the differences in legal systems and differences in market characteristics. Another key reason due to the differences in structure is that they are getting aids and different benefits from the local government, Chamber of Commerce and JCI national organization. Every country that are affiliated with The JCI National Organization, usually functions with a JCI National Organization in order to coordinate the activities of the state, local and regional levels. The National Organization generally manages the national conventions, international relationships, programs across Local Organizations and national finances (Levitt 45-46). The JCI Regional/State Organizations are predominant in countries such as Germany, US, Denmark and few other countries. It is responsible for identifying a district group and helps in organizing the various activities, events and projects. The JCI Local Organizations on the other hand works at the grassroots level and is mainly operated by a Local Organization. The local organization is principally responsible for conducting various projects and activities within the local community. At present JCI embraces more than 100 JCI National Organizations that in turn have around 5,000 JCI Local Organizations. National Organizations usually works towards finding creative solution for the problems at the international, national and local levels through the combined efforts from the members of the community. As a result of that the most appropriate and relevant structure is being followed. The organization is provided with the required physical space so as to efficiently organize the activities of members and at the same time offer them with greater opportunities of regional cooperation. The company has basically identified five key locations: the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East and Africa (Kaplan 320-326) The board of directors of the firm comes from all the four JCI areas and they are entitled to serve the organization for a period of one year. Apart from the board of directors, the company has 17 Vice Presidents, General Legal Counsel, 4 Vice Presidents, the Immediate Past President, the JCI President and the treasurer. Hence, the company has a well developed structure that supports the growth process of the firm. The organization, initiates several programs on a periodic basis so as to develop and enhance the skills and enlarge the knowledge. One such program is The JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP) which aims at recognizing the youth having the potential to shine in their own domain/chosen field thereby extracting the best quality out of the them and showcases the same in front of others. Furthermore, the company also provide development opportunities to the young people and this program is dubbed as JCI Training program. In addition, JCI twinning program is another initiative of the firm links JCI Local Organizations (more than two), who are interested in training programs. SWOT Analysis Strengths: Good market reputation for the firm across the globe Simple Business strategy Members come from different communities’ thereby promoting diversity. Weaknesses: Sometimes the organization fails to link JCI Local Organizations that obstruct events. Opportunities: The organization has the opportunity to host various other typos of events in Monaco and other countries. Threat: The company needs to continuously maintain a leadership position in the market for the purpose of getting sponsors and donators. 1.1 Description and analysis of the environment of the organization THE PRINCIPALITY OF MONACO, commonly known as Monaco, is the world second smallest country. The capital of the country is also Monaco (Jiang and Wei 599-601). The country is situated in the Mediterranean coast and the other three sides are surrounded by France. Under the Monarchy Constitution, the country is ruled by Prince Albert II. Apart from rich history, the country is also famous for hosting ‘Monaco Grand Prix’, one of the most renowned tournaments from the field of Formula 1. The casino industry is also booming in the country. In the subsequent segment, the study will analyse the external business environment of the country. The study also seeks to relate the analysis with the non profit sector of the country, as this report is related to Junior Chamber International (JCI), which is a non profit organization. The industry comprises of numerous players such as Peace and Sport, Junior Chamber International (JCI), BMW Moto Club Monaco etc. The competition in this industry is usually different from other industries as profit-making is not the aim of these organizations. The analysis of the industry forces can make the scenario clear. The job role also included implementing technical knowledge to fetch data from the internet and organize the same. To be honest, I would like state that I am highly satisfied with the job role offered to me. It not only allowed me to learn various new things, such as collection of secondary data from the internet, organizing data in a proper way and also converting raw data into meaningful information. As mentioned previously, I was also responsible for carrying out outdoor activities such as meeting with the client, finalizing the deal etc. Visiting the restaurants was one of the key activities which I had to undertake during the internship program. This improved my communication skill and it allowed me greater industry exposure. Desirable Attributes: - Good communication Skills Sound Technical knowledge Reflections on the behavioural patterns and the understanding of the aspirations of the labour force The in-depth analysis of the internal environment of the organization has clearly shown that members are very much cooperative and this act as a major strength for them (Clarke, Kwon and Wodak 455-457). I have noticed that whenever there is any major even, the effort from each members were commendable. The organizational culture was also supportive and fostered creativity and innovation. Moreover, the workers were highly supportive. For example, during my internship program, I have seen that a team member completing the task of another member. I have also seen that the business process Junior Chamber International (JCI) is very simple. The organization earns revenue from government aids, membership fees and donations. The aim of the organization is to find solution for the unique problems as a commitment to build earth a safe place to live thereby ensuring a global impact due to the activities undertaken. It gives special emphasis on the development of youth and believes in collaborative efforts. The company believes in the fact that the best results will be achieved only when the critical challenges of the society will be addressed on behalf of the communities. However, the ultimate aim is to develop the society by addressing the complex challenges. The company enjoys good reputation in the market and also manages cordial relationship with the suppliers and customers. Conclusion As a conclusion to the study, I would like to state that I was extremely satisfied with the job offered to me. The internship program allowed me to learn numerous new things which I believe would be helping me in the near future. The industry exposure was another vital addition to my career. I realized that technical knowledge is extremely important for an individual to achieve success in this competitive market place.
