Extract of sample "My Consciousness of the Basic Aspects of Education"

The Deweyan philosophy of education is based on the concept that education should respond to the needs of an individual and the needs of society in general (Noddings 5). In essence, education should be integrated within the societal dynamics with constructs that have a basis in the need to make human existence better in society. Deweyan's philosophy seems to agree with Plato’s concept of education and knowledge. According to Hall, Plato's arguments in the republic were partially driven by the inability of the political system to create order through knowledge (1).

Plato expected that the ruling class should use its knowledge to make society better. My consciousness of these basic aspects of education has inspired and directed how I perceive and use my talents and qualities, for personal development and to have a positive impact on my immediate society. At the college level is when I became conscious of the role played by education in my personal and professional development. I developed a wide readership in the philosophy of education to answer the question of why I was pursuing education apart from the fact that it promised me a comfortable future.

As a result of exposure to various theories within the philosophy of education, I realized that I could use my interests and abilities as guidance in pursuing education. I have always been conscious of trade-offs and opportunity costs whenever I am faced with a situation that requires choice between multiple alternatives. For instance, faced with the dilemma to choose athletics or chess as an extracurricular I opted for athletics. I did not just choose athletics haphazardly, but I realized that school was already too demanding and physical fitness for my personal health.

Athletics could give me relief from the stresses and pressure of academic work, I could meet persons with different interests and I would also boost my health. I have since been a dedicated member of the sprint team. Athletics is very demanding and requires discipline and a teamwork spirit. I have been able to nurture these qualities and am certain that I have made significant progress. I also decided to join the Economics club because it creates a forum for students to discuss not only to expound on issues discussed in class but also to invite professionals in the Economic field for motivation and advice.
