?Topic Why would Hamlet take revenge on Claudius ? Hamlet is the most wonderful play created by William Shakespeare where all the characters depict, treacherous act, disloyalty, greed and insanity. The story is all about how the young prince Hamlet takes revenge on his Father’s murderer with the guidance of his Father’s ghost. As a matter of fact , the Hamlet’s father who was a king of Denmark was killed by Claudius who is Hamlet’s uncle .The current King Claudius is ruling Denmark with Hamlet’s mother and wants to hold the kingship due to his greed for wealth and power. The Prince Hamlet who was ignorant about his father‘s death get the knowledge of it from the ghost of his father .The spirit of his father reveals that he was murdered by Claudius to overtake his royalty and this intimidates him to take revenge on Claudius. Prince Hamlet’s spiritual reckoning with his dead Father and his trust in him motivates him to kill Claudius.(Thesis) In this play the main theme is the revenge of Prince Hamlet and his expedition to kill his Father’s murderer. Here the King, who is Hamlet’s Father was killed by his brother – in law for wealth and power. Claudius being the murderer of King, marries his wife that is his sister and rules Denmark .Hamlet being ignorant of these facts gets encountered by his Father’s soul and understands the reality. Hence forth, he is motivated to kill Claudius by trusting his Father’s spirit’s words Claim 1 : Hamlet’s spiritual reckons his dead Father In this play ‘Hamlet’ the prince Hamlet is guided by his father’s spirit and this proves that death is not an end to life. The prince hears that some people have witnessed his father’s spirit and he believes in the same. Afterwards , he himself encounter his father ‘s spirit which gives him an insight about his father’s death and the person who is behind it. Here, his father guides him into the reality behind his death and this event brings a new course in to the life and mission of Prince Hamlet. The prince ardently starts to believe in spirit and after life and follows deeply the confession given by his Father’s ghost. We all know that we are accustomed to the belief of the existence of spirit and encountered many claims about the reality of appearance of ghost along centuries. Here in this case of Prince Hamlet, he believes in spirit and after life only after he had experienced it. He have heard of his Father’s ghostly presence from outsiders , but when he comes in contact with it in reality , he gets more indulged in the concept of spirit. His father let out the fact that he was murdered by Claudius and he wants his son to take revenge for it. Evidence : Spirituality The concept of spirituality proves that human body is merely matter and the main force which directs body and psyche is human spirit. This spirit is the soul that exists in human body and it is indestructible and unconquerable. In case of unnatural death the soul or spirit of a human is believed to be wandering on earth to take out it’s vengeance on their enemy. This aspect can be evident in the play when people said to have find the spirit of the King previously to Prince Hamlet‘s vision of it After encountering his Father’s spirit , Hamlet gets obsessed with the concept of death and views death and spirit from various angles. He is concerned about spirits awakening after death and the concept of ghost on a wider perspective. Although spirits existence is reality and there is scientific facts exists regarding it. Example – Believing in spirit is filled with uncertainty. Spirits lives in other realm of life and believing them is filled with risk and uncertainty. This is because none can establish the true motive of spirits. The spirit can announce many things with less authenticity or truthful background. If one believe in them ,then he may have to take actions which is unethical and immoral just to satisfy the wavering intentions of the encountered spirit. It is not really sensible to trust on the words of spirit as its existence is not sure or authentic. If we trust ghost , then there can exist a factor of unethical and immorality on the actions we do based on its statements. Evidence : Trust Here, Prince Hamlet has undying trust on his Father and believes in his spirit’s words and guidance. When one think from a realistic point, this belief and trust of Hamlet looks absurd and foolish. However, he trusts in his Father’s words and takes an oath to murder Claudius who is the reason for his Father’s death. His Father being the King, had every right to rule the Kingdom of Denmark but was cheated and succeeded by his Uncle and his mother. It is true, that trust can move mountains and a word from a person who existing in the super natural world has the power to create deviation in the thought and minds of a person and lead him to satisfy the soul’s wants and desires. Claim 2. Hamlet’s trust in his father’s spirit kills Claudius After Hamlet hears about the wandering spirit of his father ,he is encountered with his Father’s spirit and is informed about the vengeful murder of him by the current King Claudius. Hamlet is startled by this confession of his Father’s spirit and takes the pledge to kill Claudius. Hamlet believes in all facts and stories let out by his Father’s spirit and nurtures vengeance and hatred towards his uncle and plan to murder him. He has enormous trust on his Father’s words and does not scrutinize his intention and believes him blindly .This undying trust cause the death of Claudius from the hands of Hamlet. Evidence : Supernatural element In this play, Hamlet is proceeding to murder Claudius on the basis of words spoken by his Father’s spirit. The existence of spirit is a super natural concept and Hamlet blindly trust on his Father’s words and this can be seen as absurdity by many. But the existence of supernatural world is not a myth. It is proved by philosophical, religious and scientific world that spirits do exist and it is an integral part of our existence. Factually, it is not by body but by spiritual energy we survive and live in the world or after world. Example : Spirits have vengeance and desires Spirits have vengeance and desires as they constitute of ego, mind and consciousness. Every spirit carries with it the astral body which constitutes the explained elements of ego, mind and consciousness. Here the Dead King wanted to destroy his murderer and for this he has chosen his son as a weapon. And amazingly, the spirit of King, succeeds in his mission and destroy his killer. Discussion In the play “ Hamlet” the main plot is of the Prince attempting to kill his Father’s murderer based on the facts told by his Father’s spirit. Here the prince kills Claudius who is supposed to be his Father’s murdered according to the facts told by the King’s spirit. Here there is lots of trust and uncertainty in the story as words of spirits cannot be relied upon completely. However, Hamlet’s love and affection for his father and his trust in death and life thereafter motivates him to kill Claudius and hamlet himself get killed in his endeavor. Read More
