Extract of sample "Art"

At one of the most important moments of my life as an artist, I came to recognize the importance of interior design in the works of an artist. The close connection between interior design and fine art has appealed to me as I enjoy fine art background and interior design allows me to marry form and function in creating things that feel useful.

Art has been very close to my life from my childhood and I grew up with my artistic parents. To me, being an artist is my inevitable fate and I enjoy the great experience of being exposed to fine art. Formally, I studied sculpture in high school and the graduate Media Art program at the Kay-won College of Art. As time passed by, I realized that my work is the only means for me to contribute to the society I live in and I came to wonder what my work could do for people and how it could make their lives better. Whereas helping people as an artist is a great thing, it was not enough to meet my purpose in life. I have often wondered about the gap between art and real life, and I wish to make the lives of people better through art. Art and Interior design are closely related and the latter helps me in bridging the gap between art and real life. In other words, my artistic life as an interior designer can help me accomplish my dream to make the lives of people better. Thus, I have chosen the study of Interior design, because I believe that I can help people as an interior designer.

Interior design is closely connected with fine art and I am greatly excited to learn it. In fact, learning interior design gives me more pleasure and satisfaction than that of fine art. However, I greatly believe that my fine art background helps me to be more creative and successful in interior design.

My great interest in drawing has helped me in developing a positive mental framework toward interior design. Like most other kids, I used to draw and paint during my childhood. However, unlike others, drawing was so close to the nurture that I used to represent ideas in drawing to make them more visible to me. That is to say, drawing helps me to develop my concept. My study models always begin with my abstract sculptures. I focus on a much lower order of minutia: the smaller details of interior design where our interactions with architecture are personal. In my work of interior design, I always start with familiar objects, and bring them to varying levels of abstraction through changes in scale, materials, and context. One thing that I like about interior design is that it helps my work become more realistic than the works I have done before. My designs need to function as space for people.

In my work, form and function must interact. That is to say, the shape of a building or space should be primarily based on its intended function or purpose. These two ideas (i.e. form and function) are interconnected and the form of the work should reflect its function. It is not a linear process where the architecture is created by following a path from point A to point B. It must be a yin-yang concept where two elements are poured together, creating something greater than each other. The function of the space, the way people use the space, drives the form.

As an artist, who is also an interior designer, my goal is not only to build a space or to create beauty but also to suggest meaning. When designing space for people, it must be properly done so that it leads one to the reason behind the space. That is to say, when I design a space, I want it to have meaning. Although it does not have to make people directly that it has meaning, the design of the form should help them recognize the meaning that was intended. Through my life as an interior designer, I hope to make life in the space more pleasurable and comfortable, as well as to help people figure out where they are.
